ISAAC AND THE CROSS

Genesis 22:6 NIV
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and PLACED IT ON HIS SON ISAAC, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together.

Isaac carrying the wood up Mount Moriah is something I’ve read many times, but only now did I pay this much attention to it.

In Genesis 22, Abraham lays the wood for the offering on Isaac’s shoulders. Isaac walks up the mountain carrying what will be used for the sacrifice, unaware of how the story will fully unfold, well, that he was about to be the sacrifice. He trusts his father enough to keep walking, even while asking honest questions along the way.

And the more I read this, the harder it is not to see how this moment quietly points to the New Testament.

Centuries later, Jesus would walk another hill, carrying the wood for His own sacrifice too. Like Isaac, He bore the weight Himself. Like Isaac, He walked in obedience.

But unlike Isaac, Jesus was not spared at the last moment. What was only a test on Mount Moriah was fulfilled at Calvary.

Isaac carried the wood, but God provided a substitute. But Jesus, He carried the cross and became the substitute Himself, a substitute for me and you, for all of us.

Another parallel I saw was the absence of resistance. There was no recorded struggle. Just full obedience that trusts God’s purpose even when it isn’t fully understood.

Isaac submitted to his father’s instructions, unaware of the plan. Jesus, however, submitted to the Father’s will in spite of being fully aware of what was about to unfold.

In Isaac’s story, God revealed that He will provide.
In Jesus’ story, we see how He provided by offering Himself.

Looking into it, the wood on Isaac’s shoulders was foreshadowing the cross on Christ’s.
